What is Civitan?
Civitan is a group of people who love helping others.
The organization started in Birmingham, Alabama in 1917.
Today, there are thousands of members around the world. We form and join “Clubs” which serve the special needs communities in that area.
Civitans focus on helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
We work and partnerin communities to bring hope, help, and support.

Why Civitan Awareness Month Matters
This month is all about sharing the message.
Civitans host events.
We tell others about the good work being done.
The goal is simple: More awareness means more help for people who need it.
What We Do at Southern Crescent Civitan Club
Here at Southern Crescent Civitan Club, we bring that mission to life.
We support families in the south Atlanta and Fayette County, Georgia community, and we show up with purpose.
We provide school supplies for students.
We give holiday gifts to families in need.
We partner with local organizations to make a BIGGER and better impact.
Every act of service matters.

The Civitan Research Center: Changing Lives Through Science
Civitan does more than serve. It also supports life-changing research.
The Civitan International Research Center is located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
This center studies the brain and works to understand developmental disabilities.
More than 100 scientists work at this research center every day.
They study conditions like autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.
Their goal is to improve lives through research and treatment.
Because of this work, families have more hope for the future.
